During March and April, the children have been learning about the importance of building their empathy skills during their weekly wellbeing class. Empathy is the ability to sense other people's emotions, coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling. It's an emotional skill that allows us to respond to others in a meaningful, caring way. It's about connecting to someone by acknowledging our vulnerabilities, understanding what the person is feeling without judging or trying to find a solution to a problem.
Emapthy emerges around three to four years of age, roughly when children start to develop an elementary "theory of mind", that is the understanding that other people experience the world differently than they do. From these early forms of empathy, research suggests it can also be taught. Why build empathy in our children? - Empathy is a key ingredient to successful relationships as it helps us understand the perspectives, needs and intentions of others. - Empathy helps us feel connected to one another. - Empathy reduces bullying and increases acts of kindness and inclusion. - It reduces prejudice and racism. We are almost at the end of April and it has been a month of Autism awareness in Dubai. Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the annual autism awareness campaign was launched on the 2nd of April which is World Autism Awareness Day. Autism is a lifelong, developmental condition that affects the way a person communicates, interacts and processes information. The term 'autism spectrum' refers to the range of ways the condition presents itself in an individual which can vary greatly from person to person as well as throughout their life.
Spring break is fast approaching and has reminded us that this annual season is a time of new life, new growth, renewal and transformation. Here at JPS, challenges, growth and change are part of the student’s every-day lives but Spring is a reminder to follow along and take our cues from nature and to do a literal ‘spring cleaning’. With the longer and brighter days here in Dubai, we can use this opportunity to re-think our family health, emotions and relationships. To foster a renewed sense of well being and dust of the winter blues we could get out and about and start to get a bit more active with the family. We could be mindful to keep in touch with friends and family and also consider developing new interests. "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself." Leo Tolstoy Here in the Well Being Department change, transformation and new beginnings have been particularly relevant this month with Well Being Teacher, Natalie Sinclair commencing her maternity leave and Olivia Gavin coming on board to take over the role whilst she is away. Our office continues to be open during school hours, 5 days a week and we are always happy to help. Wishing everyone good health and a renewed sense of well being this season. to be mindful, to be grateful, to simplify and to choose experiences over things. Best wishes to you all!
Mrs. Higgins and I were invited to share our work on promoting awe at JPS with several other Dubai schools.
I was the one who came back in awe and inspired by their great visuals around the building and the amazing positive energy! Nadine |
